gotop has passed automated validation. It may have or may still fail other checks like testing (verification).
NOTE: No required changes that the validator checks have been flagged! It is appreciated if you fix other items, but only Requirements will hold up a package version from approval. A human review could still turn up issues a computer may not easily find.

Guidelines

Guidelines are strong suggestions that improve the quality of a package version. These are considered something to fix for next time to increase the quality of the package. Over time Guidelines can become Requirements. A package version can be approved without addressing Guideline comments but will reduce the quality of the package.

gotop has been flagged as part of automated virus scanning.
Package virus scanning found that at least 1 file within, or downloaded by, the package has between 6 and 10 VirusTotal detections associated with it
This package version cannot be approved without an exemption from a Moderator.

Are there any known reasons as to why there might be a higher than normal virus detection results for this package?

Starz0r (maintainer) on 16 Aug 2021 09:48:43 +00:00:

They seem to be using a GitHub Action Workflow that compresses the binaries with upx, which is probably causing it to get flagged: https://github.com/xxxserxxx/actions/blob/7eeb5da/golang-build/entrypoint.sh#L118

gotop has been flagged as part of automated virus scanning.
Package virus scanning found that at least 1 file within, or downloaded by, the package has greater than 10 VirusTotal detections associated with it.
This package is now in a waiting state while you review the findings and provide an updated package, or send a message in the package review box on the package page.

Starz0r (maintainer) on 05 Oct 2021 11:17:03 +00:00:

Should be good now.

gep13 (reviewer) on 11 Oct 2021 06:48:58 +00:00:

What led you to making the ascertion that the usage of that action was causing the problem.

Are there any links to discussions about this? Just stating that UPX is being used isn't really enough of a justifcation to provide an exemption.

Starz0r (maintainer) on 11 Oct 2021 10:08:32 +00:00:

UPX is a common binary packer, which employs a trick a lot of viruses and malware use to make transmission easier.

As far as discussions go, search around enough, especially in Go spaces, and you'll most likely come to the same conclusion. Building the application without using UPX and uploading it to VirusTotal is not going to show any results. It's the same thing with all these various types of "Self Extracting Archives", stuff like PyInstaller also falls under the same term.

And as for giving a better explaination on the package page, I'd love to! Unfortunately, I'm already at the incredibly sparce 4000 word limit. If the word limit for the description happens to get raised, I'll revisit this and give a more in-depth explaination. But for now, I feel this explaination is good enough given the circumstance. If you have any other questions about this though, feel free to ask, I'll go ahead and answer them.

gep13 (reviewer) on 18 Oct 2021 06:35:47 +00:00:

Without some additional information in the description field, pointing out where folks can find information about the high virus detections in this package, we will not be able to continue with moderating this package.

Going forward, any package that has a number of Virus detections greater than 10 will require this information be added to the description element, so this isn't just being applied here to this package.

Starz0r (maintainer) on 28 Oct 2021 13:50:15 +00:00:

Oh, trust me, I understand that packages with high detections rates require more details in the description. However, I'm unable to fufill this request without a higher word limit, as I seem to be unable to write anymore without choco pack and uploading giving errors.

Either way, I do feel as if the notice at the bottom is descriptive and good enough for anyone curious to the reasoning behind why the detection rate is so high.

gep13 (reviewer) on 08 Nov 2021 07:27:40 +00:00:

There are currently no plans to increase the limit on the number of characters that a description can contain, so the upper limit will remain at 4000.

> Either way, I do feel as if the notice at the bottom is descriptive and good enough for anyone curious to the reasoning behind why the detection rate is so high.

I have to disagree. As someone new to this package, I have no context regarding what UPX is, and how it relatest to a high virus detection result.

chocolatey-ops (reviewer) on 28 Nov 2021 07:27:58 +00:00:

We've found gotop v4.1.2 in a submitted status and waiting for your next actions. It has had no updates for 20 or more days since a reviewer has asked for corrections. Please note that if there is no response or fix of the package within 15 days of this message, this package version will automatically be closed (rejected) due to being stale.

Take action:

  • Log in to the site and respond to the review comments.
  • Resubmit fixes for this version.
  • If the package version is failing automated checks, you can self-reject the package.

If your package is failing automated testing, you can use the chocolatey test environment to manually run the verification and determine what may need to be fixed.

Note: We don't like to see packages automatically rejected. It doesn't mean that we don't value your contributions, just that we can not continue to hold packages versions in a waiting status that have possibly been abandoned. If you don't believe you will be able to fix up this version of the package within 15 days, we strongly urge you to log in to the site and respond to the review comments until you are able to.

chocolatey-ops (reviewer) on 13 Dec 2021 07:32:56 +00:00:

Unfortunately there has not been progress to move gotop v4.1.2 towards an approved status within 15 days after the last review message, so we need to close (reject) the package version at this time. If you want to pick this version up and move it towards approval in the future, use the contact site admins link on the package page and we can move it back into a submitted status so you can submit updates.

Status Change - Changed status of package from 'submitted' to 'rejected'.

demonstration

Installation

If you install gotop by hand, or you download or create new layouts or colorschemes, you will need to put the layout files where gotop can find them. To see the list of directories gotop looks for files, run gotop -h. The first directory is always the directory from which gotop is run.

Extension builds

An evolving mechanism in gotop are extensions. This is designed to allow gotop to support feature sets that are not universally needed without blowing up the application for average users with usused features. Examples are support for specific hardware sets like video cards, or things that are just obviously not a core objective of the application, like remote server monitoring.

The path to these extensions is a tool called gotop-builder. It is easy to use and depends only on having Go installed. You can read more about it on the project page. If you want less than an all-inclusive build, or one for a different OS/architecture, you can use gotop-builder itself to create your own.

Console Users

gotop requires a font that has braille and block character Unicode code points; some distributions do not provide this. In the gotop repository is a pcf font that has these points, and setting this font may improve how gotop renders in your console. To use this, run these commands:

curl -O -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/xxxserxxx/gotop/master/fonts/Lat15-VGA16-braille.psf
setfont Lat15-VGA16-braille.psf

Usage

Run with -h to get an extensive list of command line arguments. Many of these can be configured by creating a configuration file; see the next section for more information. Key bindings can be viewed while gotop is running by pressing the ? key, or they can be printed out by using the --list keys command.

In addition to the key bindings, the mouse can be used to control the process list:

  • click to select process
  • mouse wheel to scroll through processes

In cases where actual malware is found, the packages are subject to removal. Software sometimes has false positives. Moderators do not necessarily validate the safety of the underlying software, only that a package retrieves software from the official distribution point and/or validate embedded software against official distribution point (where distribution rights allow redistribution).
