2. Setup Your Environment

1. Ensure you are set for organizational deployment

Please see the organizational deployment guide

2. Get the package into your environment

  • Open Source or Commercial:
    • Proxy Repository - Create a proxy nuget repository on Nexus, Artifactory Pro, or a proxy Chocolatey repository on ProGet. Point your upstream to Packages cache on first access automatically. Make sure your choco clients are using your proxy repository as a source and NOT the default community repository. See source command for more information.
    • You can also just download the package and push it to a repository Download

3. Copy Your Script

choco upgrade notepadplusplus.settings -y --source="'INTERNAL REPO URL'" [other options]

See options you can pass to upgrade.

See best practices for scripting.

Add this to a PowerShell script or use a Batch script with tools and in places where you are calling directly to Chocolatey. If you are integrating, keep in mind enhanced exit codes.

If you do use a PowerShell script, use the following to ensure bad exit codes are shown as failures:

choco upgrade notepadplusplus.settings -y --source="'INTERNAL REPO URL'"

Write-Verbose "Exit code was $exitCode"
$validExitCodes = @(0, 1605, 1614, 1641, 3010)

  Exit 0

Allows Notepad++ settings to be installed from a provided URL.

To use, you will need to call Chocolatey like so:

choco install notepadplusplus.settings -params 'url='

I recommend using the -Force flag for subsequent settings updates.

Because Notepad++ has several configuration files, the URL must specify a folder. The package installation will then attempt to download all of the following files:

  • config.xml
  • contextMenu.xml
  • functionList.xml
  • langs.xml
  • shortcuts.xml
  • stylers.xml
  • <your theme>.xml

To get your theme copied, you must drop your current theme file into the directory as well.

$packageName = "Notepadplusplus.Settings"

	$params = $env:chocolateyPackageParameters -split ';' | ConvertFrom-StringData
	$url = $params.url;
	$programFiles = if (${env:ProgramFiles(x86)} -ne $null) { ${env:ProgramFiles(x86)} } else { $env:ProgramFiles }
	if ($url)
		Write-Host "Downloading from URL $url"
		Get-ChocolateyWebFile $packageName "$env:appdata\Notepad++\config.xml" "$url/config.xml"
		Get-ChocolateyWebFile $packageName "$env:appdata\Notepad++\contextMenu.xml" "$url/contextMenu.xml"
		Get-ChocolateyWebFile $packageName "$env:appdata\Notepad++\functionList.xml" "$url/functionList.xml"
		Get-ChocolateyWebFile $packageName "$env:appdata\Notepad++\langs.xml" "$url/langs.xml"
		Get-ChocolateyWebFile $packageName "$env:appdata\Notepad++\shortcuts.xml" "$url/shortcuts.xml"
		Get-ChocolateyWebFile $packageName "$env:appdata\Notepad++\stylers.xml" "$url/stylers.xml"
		# Find the theme file
		$themeNode = Select-Xml -Path "$env:appdata\notepad++\config.xml" -XPath "//GUIConfig[@name='stylerTheme']"
		$themePath = $themeNode.node.path
		$themeFile = Split-Path $themePath -Leaf
		Get-ChocolateyWebFile $packageName "$programFiles\Notepad++\themes\$themeFile" "$url/$themeFile"
		throw "No URL specified. Try calling choco install Notepadplusplus.Settings -params 'url='"

In cases where actual malware is found, the packages are subject to removal. Software sometimes has false positives. Moderators do not necessarily validate the safety of the underlying software, only that a package retrieves software from the official distribution point and/or validate embedded software against official distribution point (where distribution rights allow redistribution).

Chocolatey Pro provides runtime protection from possible malware.
