IMPORTANT

This version is in moderation and has not yet been approved. This means it doesn't show up under normal search.

  • Until approved, you should consider this package version unsafe - it could do very bad things to your system (it probably doesn't but you have been warned, that's why we have moderation).
  • This package version can change wildly over the course of moderation until it is approved. If you install it and it later has changes to this version, you will be out of sync with any changes that have been made to the package. Until approved, you should consider that this package version doesn't even exist.
  • You cannot install this package under normal scenarios. See How to install package version under moderation for more information.
  • There are also no guarantees that it will be approved.
WARNING

There are versions of this package awaiting moderation (possibly just this one). See the Version History section below.

ngrok has passed automated validation. It may have or may still fail other checks like testing (verification).
NOTE: No required changes that the validator checks have been flagged! It is appreciated if you fix other items, but only Requirements will hold up a package version from approval. A human review could still turn up issues a computer may not easily find.

Guidelines

Guidelines are strong suggestions that improve the quality of a package version. These are considered something to fix for next time to increase the quality of the package. Over time Guidelines can become Requirements. A package version can be approved without addressing Guideline comments but will reduce the quality of the package.

  • The licenseUrl should be added if there is one. Please correct this in the nuspec, if applicable. More...
  • Release Notes (releaseNotes) are a short description of changes in each version of a package. Please include releasenotes in the nuspec. NOTE: To prevent the need to continually update this field, providing a URL to an external list of Release Notes is perfectly acceptable. More...
Suggestions

Suggestions are either newly introduced items that will later become Guidelines or items that are don't carry enough weight to become a Guideline. Either way they should be considered. A package version can be approved without addressing Suggestion comments.

ngrok has been flagged as part of automated virus scanning.
Package virus scanning found that at least 1 file within, or downloaded by, the package has between 6 and 10 VirusTotal detections associated with it.
This package version cannot be approved without an exemption from a Moderator.

gep13 (reviewer) on 12 Jul 2024 12:33:56 +00:00:

Hello,

The count of Virustotal positives is high for this package version.

If there a known reason that this software may have a high rate of false positives, please link to the upstream documentation (for example it could be an issue or wiki) in the package description.

Then ask for an exemption and a moderator will review the documentation.

If there is not a known and documented reason, please contact the software authors to see if they have any reasons they can document.

s.subbakrishna (maintainer) on 12 Jul 2024 14:32:47 +00:00:

Hello we have encountered a number of false positives because malicious actors have used our software as part of their own applications. However, the actual ngrok application itself does not contain malware but we are tagged as a PUA/PUP by some antivirus tools as a result.
We have been trying to work with those tools to remove this identification but since it is a reputation problem rather than a software problem, this has been slow. Is there a way to get an exemption? We do use signing to verify the binary is from ngrok

TheCakeIsNaOH (reviewer) on 13 Jul 2024 14:29:53 +00:00:

Hi,

If there are less than five detections on Virustotal, they are assumed to be false positives, and do not block the package from approval.

If any of the files have five to ten detections, they require the package to go through human moderation. In these cases, an exemption can be granted with moderator approval, if there is a note in the package description linking to upstream documentation about the reason for the high virus counts. That link you provided above is exactly what to link to. There is an example package with the note in the description here: https://community.chocolatey.org/packages/autohotkey.portable

If any of the files have more than ten detections, the package is not allowed to be approved on the Community Repository as a blanket policy.

Regards, TheCakeIsNaOH

In cases where actual malware is found, the packages are subject to removal. Software sometimes has false positives. Moderators do not necessarily validate the safety of the underlying software, only that a package retrieves software from the official distribution point and/or validate embedded software against official distribution point (where distribution rights allow redistribution).

Chocolatey Pro provides runtime protection from possible malware.
