Deployment Method:
This applies to both open source and commercial editions of Chocolatey.
1. Enter Your Internal Repository Url
(this should look similar to https://community.chocolatey.org/api/v2/)
2. Setup Your Environment
1. Ensure you are set for organizational deployment
Please see the organizational deployment guide
2. Get the package into your environment
Option 1: Cached Package (Unreliable, Requires Internet - Same As Community)-
Open Source or Commercial:
- Proxy Repository - Create a proxy nuget repository on Nexus, Artifactory Pro, or a proxy Chocolatey repository on ProGet. Point your upstream to https://community.chocolatey.org/api/v2/. Packages cache on first access automatically. Make sure your choco clients are using your proxy repository as a source and NOT the default community repository. See source command for more information.
- You can also just download the package and push it to a repository Download
-
Open Source
-
Download the package:
Download - Follow manual internalization instructions
-
-
Package Internalizer (C4B)
-
Run: (additional options)
choco download poshdevops --internalize --version=0.0.28 --source=https://community.chocolatey.org/api/v2/
-
For package and dependencies run:
choco push --source="'INTERNAL REPO URL'"
- Automate package internalization
-
Run: (additional options)
3. Copy Your Script
choco upgrade poshdevops -y --source="'INTERNAL REPO URL'" --version="'0.0.28'" [other options]
See options you can pass to upgrade.
See best practices for scripting.
Add this to a PowerShell script or use a Batch script with tools and in places where you are calling directly to Chocolatey. If you are integrating, keep in mind enhanced exit codes.
If you do use a PowerShell script, use the following to ensure bad exit codes are shown as failures:
choco upgrade poshdevops -y --source="'INTERNAL REPO URL'" --version="'0.0.28'"
$exitCode = $LASTEXITCODE
Write-Verbose "Exit code was $exitCode"
$validExitCodes = @(0, 1605, 1614, 1641, 3010)
if ($validExitCodes -contains $exitCode) {
Exit 0
}
Exit $exitCode

#Project Guidelines
##Feature Design
When designing features:
1. All features must support both interactive and non-interactive consumption via PowerShell.
##Development
####1 General
#####1.1 Follow MSDN Guidelines
PowerShell usage must be consistent with, [MSDN guidelines](https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd835506(v=vs.85).aspx). (some useful links within those guidelines are: [Module Installation](https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd878350%28v=vs.85%29.aspx), [Command naming](https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms714428%28v=vs.85%29.aspx), [Standard Cmdlet parameter Names and Types](https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd878352(v=vs.85).aspx)
####2 CI-Tasks
#####2.1 Use string[] For Parameters Being Passed To Things Outside Powershell
When defining a DevOps task, if a parameter will be used asa pass-through to something outside Powershell (example: invoking a .exe), make the parameter of type string[]. For a great background on why see [powershell-call-operator-using-an-array-of-parameters-to-solve-all-your-quoting-problems](https://com2kid.wordpress.com/2011/09/25/powershell-call-operator-using-an-array-of-parameters-to-solve-all-your-quoting-problems/)
* [QuickStart](./QuickStart.md)
From your source root:
```PowerShell
PoshDevOps\New-Build
```
###1 Configurable Parameters
When developing a DevOps task that requires/allows configuration, add parameters to your Invoke-PoshDevOpsTask method signature with type `string` and any desired name (excluding names beginning with PoshDevOps which is reserved for Automatic Parameters).
Example:
```PowerShell
function Invoke-PoshDevOpsTask(
[string][Parameter(Mandatory=$true,ValueFromPipelineByPropertyName=$true)]$CustomParam1,
[string][Parameter(Mandatory=$true,ValueFromPipelineByPropertyName=$true)]$CustomParam2)
{
# implementation snipped...
}
```
###2 Automatic Parameters
PoshDevOps will automatically populate certain DevOps task parameters, the names of which always start with the prefix `PoshDevOps`.
These parameters provide information about the executing task group/DevOps task.
To use automatic parameters, add parameters matching the type and name of defined automatic parameters to your Invoke-PoshDevOpsTask method signature and PoshDevOps will populate them at invocation time.
Example:
```PowerShell
function Invoke-PoshDevOpsTask(
[string][Parameter(Mandatory=$true,ValueFromPipelineByPropertyName=$true)]$PoshDevOpsProjectRootDirPath,
[string][Parameter(Mandatory=$true,ValueFromPipelineByPropertyName=$true)]$PoshDevOpsTaskName)
{
# implementation snipped...
}
```
#####2.1 [string]$PoshDevOpsProjectRootDirPath
Always available;equals the project root dir path of the currently executing task group
#####2.2 [string]$TaskName
Always available;equals the name of the currently executing DevOps task
###What problems does PoshDevOps attempt to solve?
Build/Deployment services today are extremely powerfull and easy to use. However, if you throw your DevOps together in most of these services you are left with:
######-1 lack of versioning side by side source code
######-2 coupling of implementation to a proprietary build/deployment service.
######-3 no capability to run outside of a proprietary build/deployment
######-4 expenses (subscriptions, licenses, hardware, etc...)
######-5 one off scripts lacking any any sort of modularity
######-6 rampant copying/pasting, general lack of reuse
###How does PoshDevOps attempt to solve them?
######+1 versioning side by side source code
######+2 implemented as plain old PowerShell modules
######+3 ability to run anything capable of running PowerShell
######+4 no expenses (as long as you have something capable of running PowerShell ;))
######+5 all tasks are implemented as PowerShell modules
######+6 all tasks are package sourced and inherently reuseable
###How do I install it?
Make sure you have [Chocolatey](https://chocolatey.org) installed, then from PowerShell run
```POWERSHELL
choco install poshdevops -version 0.0.27; # 0.0.27 was latest at time of writing
Import-Module "C:\Program Files\PoshDevOps\Modules\PoshDevOps" -Force
```
###In a nutshell, hows it work?
***Conceptually:***
- `task groups` contain an ordered set of tasks
- `tasks` are arbitrary operations implemented as PowerShell modules and packaged as .nupkg's.
***Operationally:***
- everything takes place within PowerShell
- as you [CRUD](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Create,_read,_update_and_delete) each `task group` a snapshot is maintained in a `TaskGroup.psd1` file.
- at any time you can invoke your `task group` and pass in any parameters your `tasks` rely on
###How do I get started?
navigate to the root directory of your project:
```POWERSHELL
Set-Location "PATH-TO-ROOT-DIR-OF-YOUR-PROJECT"
```
create a new task group:
```POWERSHELL
New-PoshDevOpsTaskGroup
```
add a task to your plan:
```POWERSHELL
Add-PoshDevOpsTask -Name "Compile" -ModulePath "PATH-TO-DIR-CONTAINING-MODULE"
```
invoke your task group:
```POWERSHELL
@{Compile=@{Var1='Value1';Var2='Value2'}} | Invoke-PoshDevOpsTaskGroup
```
###How do I distribute my task group?
When you run `New-PoshDevOpsTaskGroup` it creates a folder named `.PoshDevOps` at the root of your project. From then on all modifications to your task groups are maintained inside that folder so your .PoshDevOps folder is all you need!
(pro-tip: check your .PoshDevOps folder in to source control to version your task group along with your code.)

In cases where actual malware is found, the packages are subject to removal. Software sometimes has false positives. Moderators do not necessarily validate the safety of the underlying software, only that a package retrieves software from the official distribution point and/or validate embedded software against official distribution point (where distribution rights allow redistribution).
Chocolatey Pro provides runtime protection from possible malware.
